Peach Blossoms in a Convent

Xie Fangde

Intruders are not welcome to Peach Blossom Land,

When flowers begin to redden, spring’s near at hand.

Let no fallen petals follow the running stream,

Lest fisherman intrude into villagers’ quiet dream.

“Peach Blossoms in a Convent” is a seven-line poem written by Xie Fangde, a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty. In the poem, the author does not directly depict the scenery of peach blossoms in the temple, but expresses his feelings through the scenery, comparing the quiet temple to a paradise to escape the tyranny of the Qin Dynasty, hoping to take refuge in seclusion here and never interact with the world. The author is in a troubled world, seeing the mountains and rivers shattered and the country falling into ruin, and he is worried about the situation.
